New Kristen and Garrett Interview with Vulture

Kristen Stewart and Garrett Hedlund are in the middle of a game of Q&A chicken. They’re sitting in a courtyard at the Beverly Hills Four Seasons on a hot November morning, staring at each other over a small table, waiting for the other one to crack first and answer my question. The only movement comes from the smoke wafting off his cigarette and the slowly forming half-smile on each of their faces.

All I’ve done to provoke this battle of wills is to ask, “Which of you is most like your character in On the Road?” In the new film adaptation of the classic Jack Kerouac–penned road trip novel (which opens today in limited release), Hedlund plays the charismatic bohemian Dean Moriarty, and Stewart is cast as Dean’s carnal free spirit of a girlfriend, Marylou. Neither actor wants to brag that he or she closely resembles an iconic literary character, so it becomes obvious to both that a round of mutual compliments is the only way out of this question. But who will be brave enough to suck it up and go first?

“He’s got a lot of Dean in him,” Stewart finally says.

“He’s got a lot of teeth in him?” Hedlund replies, in mock-confusion.

“Dean!” she insists, as they both start laughing. It isn’t hard to coax a smile from Stewart and Hedlund, even if their screen personas would suggest otherwise. Both are best known for their straightforward, sullen work in big-bucks franchise roles — she in Twilight, he in Tron Legacy — and you can see what drew them to On the Road, a film populated not by computer programs but flesh-and-blood people, where the characters aren’t undead but instead, really living.

 In Twilight, it's only on the penultimate movie that the leading couple had a romantic sex scene. But Kristen Stewart, the performer of the delicate heroine of the vampire saga, says: "I see actresses do ridiculous fake sex scenes in movies and then declare that they felt safe on set." At 22 years old and as the highest-paid actress in Hollywood between May 2011 and 2012, earning $ 34.5 million according to Forbes magazine, Kristen says it was says with a fearless attitude to nudity that she starred On the Road, which premieres in Brazil on July 13.

 In Walter Salles' movie she plays Marylou, free-spirited young woman who becomes the lover of two friends who cross roads of the United States in an existential journey. "I would have joined these two guys, for sure," says Kristen, adding that she read Jack Kerouac's book as an adolescent, and that she admires people with libertarian attitudes. Off screen, however, she has a life within the rules and maintains a secretive romance with Robert Pattinson, her partner in Twilight.

How would you describe the experience of working in On the Road? 
K: It was the greatest experience I had doing movies. I wasn't part of the entire filming trip, but I went to Montreal to join the team and prepare. Then I went to New Orleans, Phoenix and San Francisco. Then I came home and made another Twilight movie. What was strange, because I wanted to go back to that experience with Walter (Salles), which was discontinued. I had no time to think about what had happened in those weeks on the road. What, in fact, closely resembles the experience of my character.

Were you afraid of doing the sex scenes? 
K: On the contrary, I wanted to do the sex scenes. I like movies that test my limits. It's a way to challenge myself, to leave the comfort zone. I confess that I lived more interesting experiences during those four weeks of filming on the road than in my normal life. The sequences of nudity among the characters are discreet and did not show genitals.

Did that make you more comfortable? 
K: I see actresses do ridiculous fake sex scenes in movies and then declare that they felt safe on the set. In most cases, the sequences seem fake, you can see that they are using skin color strips to cover their breasts. I didn't want to feel safe. It' much more interesting to see genuine sex scenes than something we realize that it's fake. I always wanted to be as close as possible to actual experience.

Burnham & Highbridge WeeklyTwilight star Kristen Stewart has admitted she had a hard time growing up in the public eye. She told the Radio Times that she was uncomfortable with fame even before she made Twilight, with the release of Panic Room when she was 13.

“People would come up to me when I was eating with my family in a restaurant or something, and I would always just curl up into myself in a ridiculous manner,” she said. “My family would be so embarrassed and it would be like, ‘Kristen, what are you doing? Just be nice and say hello.’ And I honestly don’t know what my problem was.”



Kristen, who has been in Cannes promoting her new film On The Road, added: “I think it’s natural that 13-year-olds can be pretty insecure but what’s unnatural about it was that I wasn’t insecure. I loved talking to people, normally….It’s just fame. That’s what I had a really hard time with. I was such a freak with all that stuff in the beginning and that’s why everyone thought I was such a weirdo. I was definitely overly self-conscious.”


The US actress added of Twilight: “I acknowledge that people will absolutely identify me with Bella forever and it’s had a hand in giving me everything that I have, which is a lot. It’s undeniable that a lot of people will know me for that. But whether, personally, that was the one that defined me? Probably not.”

  APNews Kristen Stewart understands the lure of the open road. So do her “On The Road” co-stars, Garrett Hedlund and Sam Riley.
The three young actors play the central love triangle in Walter Salles’ adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s Beat Generation novel, an experience that has helped them appreciate why the book is considered a classic.
The tale of wannabe writer (and Kerouac surrogate) Sal Paradise and his friend Dean Moriarty crisscrossing the United States in search of freedom and the elusive “it” was published in 1957. But Stewart said the way it captures the heady feeling of young adulthood is timeless.

“You’re so filled with something that is hard to identify at this age,” said the “Twilight” star, who plays Dean’s teenage bride Marylou, a free spirit torn between the lure of adventure and desire for a more settled life.
“You’re just bursting, and (the characters) value that so much,” said Stewart, who is just 22 herself.


“They don’t ignore it. That celebration of youth and exploration is just something that you envy.
“I read it right at the point when I was about to get my (driver’s) license, and I thought, wow, I want to meet people who push me the way people push each other. I wanted to be more like them.”

Kristen talks about how important it was to know the woman behind the character of Marylou, especially because initially, it was difficult for her to understand how Marylou could take the “abuse” of being cheated on in stride.

She says of Marylou, “She is very vivid, very sexy…, but there is so much depth and awareness. She was a very sensitive girl, as well. It was easier for me to play her because I am very ‘inward’. She’s so open and generous and can see the beauty in absolutely everyone. To know that made it easier to play the part…. Why is she taking this abuse? That was always a question. She actually took it in stride. She had very different priorities than most people… different limits and different boundaries. To understand that, being a fairly normal girl who would not want my boyfriend cheating on me, it was good to know the woman behind the character.”



Kristen discusses how ‘On the Road’ is still relevant today. She says, “I don’t think it’s ever been irrelevant… There is a certain stage of life that is representative…. People who want to surround themselves with people who push them, people who have different wants in life and are not afraid to follow them. So, I don’t think that ever really went away.”

Kristen Tells 24 Frames Kerouac Changed Her Life

The exploits of Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady were first described in “On the Road,” Kerouac’s autobiographical novel featuring alter-egos Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty, more than a half-century ago.

But the stars of the book’s first-ever film adaptation say they believe the Beat bible resonates as much as ever, and that it has coursed through their lives in unexpected ways.

“I read it at 14 or 15 and I was touched. I said ‘I need to find people that push me like this. I want to find people in my life that I want to run after,” Stewart, who costars with Garrett Hedlund (Moriarty) and Sam Riley (Sal Paradise), told 24 Frames.

At a rooftop restaurant Thursday morning, Stewart was still taking it all in. Dressed in a sleeveless leather top and sneaking in a quick snack of restaurant rolls, the actress was reflecting on perhaps her most prestigious role to date, as well as her first trip to oft-chaotic Cannes. “I’m a pretty nervous person, but for some reason I feel comfortable here,” she said..

Hedlund did Stewart’s Cannes virginity one better — before this trip, the Minnesota native had never been to France. Smoking a cigarette alongside Stewart and Riley, the 27-year-old said he was similarly moved by Kerouac, noting that it echoed through the generations because the feeling it captures hasn’t changed.

Stewart acknowledged that “On the Road” made her want to take on other real-life stories. (She also previously played Joan Jett in the femme-rocker biopic “The Runaways”)

“You wonder a lot more about the whys” with a real-life tale, she said. “And we had such an emotional responsibility to these people. They became our family, which is so much more driving.”

She said that in incarnating Marylou, who is often seen in various states of undress, “I wanted to find the person behind the character, and not the easy way of just playing the character as the girl who likes to [have sex] a lot.”

Omelete During our interviews for Snow White and The Huntsman, done during the weekend in Mexico City, we had the opportunity to sit down with Kristen Stewart to talk about On The Road, the movie adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s book that the brazilian Walter Salles directed and will show this Wednesday at the Cannes Festival.

The romance from 1957 tell the story of Sal Paradise (Sam Riley), a normal guy that lives in New Jersey and meets the hallucinating traveler from Denver, Dean Moriarty (Garett Hedlund). The new-comer’s magnetic personality wins over Sal and they leave to travel the United States in a self-discovery journey. Kristen Stewart plays Marylou, Dean’s wife.


The actress started by remembering her first encounter with the filmmaker. “I met Walter when I was 16 or 17. And I’m very happy the movie was not done until I was about 21. I would have never been able to do it.”
For her, who has On The Road as her “first favorite book”, all those involved understand perfectly the pressure and responsibility of adapting the beatnik romance. “And Walter is perfect. The best thing about any director is the ability to motivate, to guide you. But with him is different… I’ve never met a man so capable of reuniting a group of people so perfectly. I know people who would do, literally, anything for him. Would lay on the floor for people to step on them. But he would never do that. He’s an amazing director, dude. I never felt to free to express myself as I feel with him. The sign of a great director is when you feel that you two find something together, even when he, without you noticing, guided you throughout every step of the way in the direction he wanted. When you realize, you already got there and don’t even know how. But he was the one who took you”, tells the actress.
Kristen said she’s extremely proud of the result. “Everything that it’s supposed to make you feel, it does. It’s a very honest version of On the Road, where we learn everything that has to be learned about the book”. The actress explained that the production did a month of “Beatnik training”, with the presence of specialists, biographers and people related to the characters in real life. ”Even my character’s daughter was there. And we had hours and hours of recordings, voices, first hand information – that we could absorb and then completely forget so we could, when we got to the set, find all those things is ouselves, naturally. In Twilight we wanted to say line by line of the script, how it was in the book. I wanted that. But with On The Road everything was so spontaneous… everything jumped, moved us, breathed… without guiding us by the hand to a specific place, but leaving us to find that state inside of all that. And I think that’s exactly what the book does. You can interpretate it in so many ways. I already read it a hundred times and it’s never the same. And I think the same will happen to the movie – and that’s all Walter’s doing”, she exalted.
Kirsten Dunst, Steve Buscemi, Amy Adams, Viggo Mortensen and Alice Braga are also in the cast. The screen writer of Motorcycle Diaries, Jose Rivera, adapted the book.
The shootings happened on U.S roads, Canada and Mexico.
The international project has the participation of Salle’s Videofilmes and the American Zoetrope, of Francis Ford Coppola. On the Road is scheduled to premiere in Brasil on July 13.
