Old Interview from Cannes with Dagens Nyheter (Sweden) with a few new quotes
The vampire star doesn’t hold back when it comes to his image. His latest movie, “Cosmopolis” is set in a limo, where he lives with daily prostate examinations and customer visits.
Robert Pattinson is walking with a cup of coffee in one hand a red lollipop in the other hand at the hotel’s restaurant, at the rooftop in Cannes. He manages to not look like a moviestar which is very clever because everybody follows the moviestars in Cannes, and it’s like you can almost feel the air crackles of static electricity.
But that doesn’t seem to bother this 26-years-old british man. He talks, laughs and is excited and often sounds, frankly, like he was a few years younger and not a young veteran with experience from a dozen feature films.
-It was so weird at the screening yesterday, cause I didn’t even see the movie, I just sat there and listened if someone coughs. I just sat there and thought -”Oh God, please let it go well, oh god please!”
So little, it helps the confidence to have been involved in a “Harry Potter” film, and that after having been a handsome vampire in four Twilight movies, be a superstar and dream guy for 3 billion teenage girls. He had a particular reason to worry. The film “Cosmopolis” is not digestible. It is based on a novel by the esteemed American writer Don DeLillo from 2003. Pattinson plays an immensely rich and bizarre young businessman who travels in a huge limousine through a city – they associates to New York- in the uprising. The car is his office, at various stops employees jumps in to bring him into the world situations and the business. It’s bad made on all fronts, class war rages, his own empire is about to collapse, as well as his marriage. Nothing seems unperturbed Pattinson’s character, which, although it is becoming more violent on the streets are determined to go straight through town to get a haircut.

There are very positive quotes from the Cannes Director. There are a few mistakes in the article tho like the Tom Sturridge picture that they used isn’t one of Tom’s or them saying that Rob wanted the part of Jeff Buckley in the biopic. But those are mistakes from he writer of the article. The quotes are legit.
They ask Thierry if they “have the first draft of the new generation of young actors” and he replies “it’s hard to say, the competition is tough. You have to make the right choices & meet the right people. Pattinson & Stewart had the chance of rising from Twilight unlike other young actors that are as talented as they are. There are in Hollywood, young actors waiting in the shadow. The market is ruthless. But as for Pattinson & Stewart, they’re showing a remarkable maturity when it comes to their careers. And they’re wonderful in both movies.”
The article talks about Leo Dicaprio then: He managed to (almost) make people forget about Jake from Titanic. going from teenager’s walls to movie-goers shelves. Will the Twilight actors be able to finance movies that are both challenging and expensive due to their names? “It’s going on to depend on the success of their first steps in the ‘grown up’ cinema and on the power they will exerce on the screenwriter producers.”continues Thierry Frémaux. “Cannes 2012 is going to show that there is a movement to go back to the “big” American Auteur cinema. The interview was done in a private club in Sunset Boulevard. He hid his intense beauty under a baseball cap, a blonde scruff, a lumberkjack shirt, a white tee and washed out jeans. They had the interview on the terrace where he could light up his cigarettes.
Between light coughs and nervous laughs, he explains that he doesn't feel at home here. His dream is to work in a black comedy of Todd Solodnz or in dramas for men by James Gray or Jacques Audiard.
"I was scared of being cut off from the art-house cinema that I always felt passionate about. I was scared to never be asked to play in anything interesting, that my life would pass and that someone would ask me one day, 'so apart from Twilight, what did you do?'. In this industry, you're easily typecast"
"I never proved anything, I was never fooled by the hysteria that surrounds me. It's the character that I play, Edward Cullen, the romantic vampire. Besides, before the movie was even made, girls would screams at Stephenie Meyer's public readings."
When he got the script for Cosmopolis: He got the fear of the beginner/novice. "I was so scared I would screw this up that I spent a week trying to find a way to refuse the job. And then I told myself that I shouldn't be so stuck-up. My agent was nervous: 'why would you accept if you don't understand it?'. I confessed my confusion to David and he liked it. I think that might be why he hired me. Most actors would have try to act cooler, try to say something smart but I was completely lost."
Cronenberg said that the actor didn't come on set with his hands in his pockets. That he's an assiduous reader, who's been interested in the character of the 'golden boy' for a long while, one who's close to the one he portrays in Cosmopolis. 'Money' by Martin Amis - which describes the giddy heights of easy money and the chic hedonism - is one of his bedtime readings. He finds so many similarities with himself in the empty space of the star system, that he wrote how own version of the novel, in hopes of playing it one day.
"I thought about it for Cosmopolis of course but the characters are too different and Cronenberg prefered that I knew nothing. He wanted me to give in, to say my lines in almost an abstract way, like poetry. It was exciting and a little scary. Today I'm nervous about the idea of having to talk to an audience about a movie that stays dark. But Cronenberg, himself, wanted to have something that escapes him. He would tell me about Fellini and say that a filmmaker that has a goal is dead already. It's so much more interesting than to know right away where an artist is gonna take you. Plus, its' the first time I really like one of the movies I make."

"At the beginning, I was sort of repelled by the vanity of actors. I wanted to write before everything else, but pretty fast I had to find myself. In a humdrum way, acting seemed the best way for me to express what I couldn't say in a different way."

A couple in real life but in competition against each other at Cannes. Both actors are competing for the Palme but not for the same movie.

COSMOPOLIS OFFICIAL SCREENING AT CANNES MAY 25TH?
With three titles on show in the various Cannes selections, Parisian international sales agencyKinology, led by Grégoire Melin, is among the potential grand winners of the Film Market at the upcoming 65th Cannes Film Festival (May 16 to 27).
Kinology will complete already quite substantial sales for Canadian-French co-production Cosmopolis by David Cronenberg, a film to be officially screened in the festival’s competition on Friday, May 25.

David Cronenberg's COSMOPOLIS selected for Competition at the Cannes Film Festival
David Cronenberg’s much anticipated film starring ROBERT PATTINSON will have its World Premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival running from 16-27 May 2012.
The film will play in Competition which is the most prestigious section at the festival and is one of the films that will compete for the Palme D’Or.
Cronenberg’s new project assembled a remarkable cast, headed by Robert Pattinson in the leading role, and some of the most amazing contemporary stars, including Paul Giamatti, Juliette Binoche, Kevin Durand, Samantha Morton, Mathieu Amalric, Jay Baruchel, Emily Hampshire and Patricia Mckenzie.
World famous Howard Shore, and Oscar winner composer for the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy soundtrack, is also involved in COSMOPOLIS, as well as David Cronenberg’s regular cinematographer, Peter Suschitzky, renowned for his works in “Empire Strikes Back” or “Crash”.
COSMOPOLIS is an adaptation of Don DeLillo’s story about a 28 year-old billionaire who crosses Manhattan for a haircut.
