David Cronenberg Talks About Cosmopolis and Mentions Maps to the Stars

The Blu-ray release of Cosmopolis is coming out in the heart of Oscar-campaign season. I get the sense it doesn't bug you too much that this film isn't being discussed more as a contender.

Yes. Every year I try to be as disconnected as possible. This year it's been very easy because we haven't been nominated for any awards. It's not sour grapes, it's not compensation; it's a relief. It's very easy to get caught up in it if you are nominated. The people who are releasing the movie get excited, they want you to do more, and you understand it because the awards can maybe get more people to see the film. This, on its face, is a good thing. However, it is all bullshit, it is all annoying and it is all very problematical. But it gives people stuff to write about, gives structure, we understand. But I won't be watching any of the awards shows.

End of the year lists, though — Cosmopolis did end up placing second in Cahiers du Cinema's top ten of the year.

Yes and on Sight and Sound's list, as well.

David Cronenberg Talks About Rob with ET

Twilight vamp Robert Pattinson plays a bloodsucker of an altogether different kind – the Wall Street kind – in his new movie Cosmopolis, on Blu-ray and DVD New Year's Day, and the film's director David Cronenberg tells ETonline that he was actually quite impressed with what Rob brought to the table, and that after the baggage of casting -- once you get to that point when you're on set and cameras are rolling -- "Twilight is irrelevant."

"He surprised me every day with good stuff,"
says Cronenberg. "I don't do rehearsals, and I try not to shape the actor's performance at first. I want to see what his intuition is going to deliver. And then if there's a problem then I start to shape it, nudge it, manipulate it a little bit. I did very little of that with Rob."

Based on the novel by Don DeLillo, Cosmopolis follows one day in the wild life of multi-billionaire asset manager Eric Packer, who travels aimlessly through the streets of New York City in his limousine while conducting investment trading from the back seat. As the day progresses, it devolves into an odyssey with a cast of characters that start to tear his world apart.

"He absolutely would say to you right now, 'I had no idea what I was doing at any time,' and he would mean it," says the veteran director of Rob's performance. "I think he really didn't realize how good he was. … He was surprising himself, but he was surprising me by his accuracy. It was just dead on. I mean, by the end of it we were doing one take. Honestly the whole last scene, the whole last shot in the movie with him and Paul [Giamatti] -- one take. And it's a long take as well. And it's very emotional, and very subtle. One take for both of them, it was so good. … In fact, we finished the shoot five days early, and a lot of that was due to Rob."

'Cosmopolis' in Year End Best Movies Lists

Icon Film Distribution Australia - Top 10 Actors of 2012
ROBERT PATTINSON – COSMOPOLIS

28 year-old finance golden boy Eric Packer (Robert Pattinson) appears to have it all, yet nothing is what it seems. Chauffeured across Manhattan for a haircut, the young Wall Street titan finds his world beginning to unravel: a sham marriage, sex addiction, phobias and paranoia, all amidst the crumbling of his empire. As the day devolves into an odyssey that tears his world apart, Eric starts to piece together clues that lead him to a terrifying secret: his imminent assassination.

Cine Talk - Anton Bitel's So-Called 2012 Top Films
Meanwhile Cronenberg Sr showed he has lost none of his touch with Cosmopolis, starring vampire of sorts Robert Pattinson, whose career is now officially disinterred. Adapted and updated from Don De Lillo’s 2003 novel, the film follows a New York plutocrat’s ride across town for a (literal and symbolic) haircut, as in the space of one day – and mostly within the confines of his customised limousine - he loses everything. It is also an elegiac odyssey through the kind of self-destructive hubris that led to the Credit Crunch and the economic mess that we are still in today. Indeed, it has been a good year for films set in limousines, as Leos Carax’s uncategorisable Holy Motors (recently placed first in Cahiers du Cinema’s Top Ten films of 2012) also took viewers on a chauffeur-driven trip, through a Paris mapped out in cinematic references where individual identity is constructed from a series of absurdly pre-scribed parts and actor’s postures. Denis Lavant is astonishingly versatile in the lead rôle(s), even if the film at times risks running itself off the road with its episodic meanderings.

David Cronenberg Talks About Rob and Cosmopolis

Were you happy with how Cosmopolis was received?
No, I would've liked it to have made half a billion dollars at the box office! [laughs] The movie was received like an art film, which is to say it did OK in the big cities. Naturally you always want the biggest audience you can get, just as long as it doesn't cause you to compromise your moviemaking.

Why did you cast Robert Pattinson as limo-riding antihero Eric Packer?
Eric is in absolutely every scene, so you need an actor who is interesting and charismatic enough to look at for the entire movie. You want someone who can really come up with surprises and angles, and has a level of stardom that will support the movie. He also had to do a credible New York accent. All of that led me to Rob.

Robert in "Numéro Hommes" French Magazine

Translation

Robert Pattinson
Cosmopolis, the last David Cronenberg film, changed everything for Pattinson. His young trader character has no scruples and no morality. He underwent a per rectal examination while chatting along with his employee in his stretch limo. The doctor concludes he has an asymmetric prostate. This was an amazing scene which transformed the Twilight Adonis into a serious actor. He now takes risks while still retaining his allure. His strange face is fascinating and nobody is ashamed to admit they think he’s great. He is the star of the decade!

New/Old Rob Interview from Cannes

The interview is from tha Greek newspaper "To Vima" and was given to film critic Giannis Zoumboulakis.
Blame it on the typecast of pale, out of this world vampire that accompanies him. I don't know what I expected from Robert Pattinson, but what I got up close was a totally grounded behavior, a warm smile (maybe little shy too), an inherent gentleness. Pattinson was at Cannes Film Festival for David Cronenberg's "Cosmopolis", a movie where he gave his most demanding performance, which he admitted didn't know how to handle at first.

He asks for mineral water. He is immediately asked about his prostate. It's not a random question - prostate is connected to Pattinson's part in "Cosmopolis". "I wish I knew" the actor says (after a while) when he realizes the reason he is asked this "anatomically indiscreet" question. "I have to have it examined. People say is very important - everybody talks about it. I never exactly understood what prostate is anyway" he comments.

Cronenberg's Twilight

When David Cronenberg sent Pattinson "Cosmopolis" script, the young actor was at the last days of filming Twilight's last movie, titled "Breaking Dawn Part 2", which premieres in Greece on November. "I read David's script and I'm not ashamed to say I didn't understand a thing, but I admit it was too cool, too scary and too weird." Pattinson called Cronenberg to tell him he wasn't ready to play the part - mostly because he couldn't understand what the part was about. "No problem" Cronenberg said "I don't really know what it is about. But it does seem juicy - doesn't it?" Pattinson was encouraged. "I thought that under these circumstances we could have a good start. So we decided to go through with it." Written by David Cronenberg himself "Cosmopolis" script is based on Don De Lilo's novel which has the same title and describes one day in the life of young multimillionaire Eric Packer(Pattinson) inside his huge white limo. All things start from Eric's wish to have a haircut at his old neighborhood barber shop. On his way there, he will stop many times at New York's hell, meet dozens of people and finally change the way he sees his life.

"Constantly hypnotized"

I asked Pattinson what was it he couldn't understand about the script "Look, I gave it to a few friends and people I know in order to read it and they all asked "What the hell is this thing?" I guess that somehow I made myself unable to understand it, because I hadn't realize that my acting would be based exactly there. Because my part Eric simply doesn't understand. He is in search of a new and better reality. So if you place yourself in a world where you understand nothing and everything seems alien, then you see it makes sense". Later on, during filming, Cronenberg was constantly stopping shooting whenever Pattinson attempted to act and pretend to understand what was going on. "David didn't want that. He wanted me constantly hypnotized."

Juliette Binoche talks about Rob with The Guardian

You had a cameo in Cosmopolis, playing Robert Pattison's art dealer and lover …
That was great. I was astonished to see how much of a cinephile Robert was, and how ambitious – he wants to produce and has strong views of what he wants to do in the movie world.

He's been going through a tough time …
Well I witnessed Jude Law going through hell as well – it can be a nightmare when people have to deal with their intimacies in public. It's not respectful, so I felt for him and for her [Kristen Stewart] as well.

Saad Siddiqui mentions working with Rob and David Cronenberg

Saad Siddiqui - who plays one of the photographers in the pie scene - mentions working with David and Rob.
Siddiqui is also happy to have met a few well-known actors at the festival, including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emily Blunt and Diane Kruger. On working with Hollywood directors like David Cronenberg, who directed him in the Robert Pattinson-led Cosmopolis, he says, “The last three Hollywood directors I have worked with are all wonderful and great. I really enjoyed working with David Cronenberg and Ruba Nadda as I have watched their films over the years. I know Ruba really well now and filmed a whole month with her in South Africa and it was an amazing experience.” The actor adds that, “the story of Inescapable was so important to her to make, I saw how dedicated she was to it, and It was a pleasure for me to help bring it to the silver screen. I would love to work again with Ruba and David.” He also enjoyed working with Pattinson, calling him a “very talented actor and a very kind and caring human being”, before recalling how welcoming he was when they first met on set and how enjoyable the experience was.
