Rob and Cronenberg Talk Cosmopolis, Fame, Tabloids, Money and More with LA Times

NEW YORK — Jon Stewart tried to bait him with Ben & Jerry's Karamel Sutra. "Good Morning America" host George Stephanopoulos offered him Cinnamon Toast Crunch. But maybe French fries would have been a better ploy to get Robert Pattinson to spill some juicy personal details about his breakup with costar Kristen Stewart.

"Media culture is a monstrous thing," Pattinson lamented Wednesday afternoon, jamming fries into his mouth between puffs on his electronic cigarette. "You can't win. The annoying thing is that you can't attack them, but you can't defend yourself. The best thing you could possibly do is punch a paparazzi and give them their big payday."

The 26-year-old actor has run a gantlet of publicity this week that was nominally about promoting his new film, "Cosmopolis,"which opens Friday. But the promotional blitz, which also included a New York premiere and other stops, seemed to be as much about proving his emotional resilience in the wake of the tabloid bonanza that exploded after photos surfaced of Stewart in compromising positions with 41-year-old Rupert Sanders, who directed her in"Snow White and the Huntsman."

Sitting alongside Pattinson for moral support at the Mandarin Oriental hotel on Columbus Circle was "Cosmopolis" director David Cronenberg. The Canadian filmmaker, whose challenging art house films almost never garner such wide attention, was there as a sort of buffer but also appeared to be quietly amused by the media circus. The actor's manager would not allow Pattinson to sit alone for an interview with The Times, and even suggested that reporters not ask him about his personal life, or "Twilight."

But "Twilight,"of course, is how Pattinson has become perhaps the most widely recognized young actor of his generation. In the movie franchise, based on Stephenie Meyer's bestselling young adult novels, he plays a brooding vampire who falls in love with a human girl (Stewart). The film series has grossed over $2.5 billion worldwide since launching in 2008 and will conclude in November with a fifth installment, "Breaking Dawn — Part 2." Pattinson's off-screen romance with Stewart only stoked the popularity of the vampire movies.

When the Stewart-Sanders affair burst onto the cover of Us Weekly in July, it initially seemed like there was little upside for Pattinson. But Stewart's public apology generated not only sympathy for the man wronged but also a fresh wave of interest for "Cosmopolis," which had premiered to mixed response at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

Were you already familiar with the novel by Don DeLillo? No. But I had read some of his other books. 
I first read the script sent to me by David Cronenberg and only after I read the novel. The script is so faithful to the book it's almost unbelievable, especially considering that Cosmopolis was deemed impossible to adapt. Even before reading DeLillo's work, what surprised me about the screenplay was the agitated pace and the relentless tension.

What was it about this movie that got your attention?
Cronenberg, without a doubt! I've only done a bunch of movies and I could not imagine how it would be to work with him. I was not disappointed ... I knew he would play with his creativity and that this experience would leave a mark on me. I let the script draw me in like it were a very long, misterious poem. Usually, when you read a script, you quickly understand what it's about, where it will go and how it will end, although there are unexpected twists and sophisticated solutions that change the course of the story. With the script of Cosmopolis, however, it was completely different: the more I read and could not understand how it would evolve, the more I felt the pull to be a part of the movie. It wasn't going to be like shooting any movie, but a separate and unique opportunity.

Can you even imagine the absolute shit scripts Rob gets sent his way? Think every Sparks’ adaptation*. That he’s not taking that route says a lot about the kind of career he wants to have.

*This is where I’m supposed to say “hey, nothing wrong with Nicolas Sparks’ movies,” but I can’t. I hate them all. I read *one* NS book years ago and am still trying to recover from the experience.

DAVID CRONENBERG TALKS ABOUT COSMOPOLIS

Fortunately, despite the fear that is currently paralysing the film business, Cronenberg already has his nxt film in the can. Cosmopolis is an adaptation of Don DeLilo's novel about 24 hours in the life of a Manhattan multimillionaire. "I wrote the script in six days, because the book is so cinematic - the dialogue is incredible," Cronenberg says. "That was unusual for me - to write a script that quickly. But then it was waiting to go." The project was brought by him by veteran Portuguese producer, Paolo Branco. "He flew to Toronto," Cronenberg says, "He came with his son, and said, "My son says that you are the right director for this project."

The only issue was that Cronenberg was lined up to shoot A Dangerous Method. "But Paolo said, "I will wait for you." And he did securing the services of one Robert Pattinson in the meantime to play the leading role of Eric Packer, an asset manager who endures a surreal odyssey across New York when he sets out in his hi-tech limo to get his hair cut and finds the car stuck in a monumental traffic jam. "About 70% of it takes place in the back of a limo." confirms cronenberg who still had to deal with legions of R-Pattz fans during the shoot. "It sometimes was a little difficult. But Toronto is relatively repressed, i.e civilized."
